It's not just Santa Claus who’s coming to town—millions of us travel over Christmas. Check out our Seasonal Home Security and Travel Tips to ensure you stay safe and keep that festive feeling throughout the holiday season.
Leaving your home unattended for hours or days over Christmas? The sad fact is, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), some locations see crimes such as burglaries increase by over 30% during the Christmas holidays compared to other months. Unoccupied homes full of gifts make rich pickings for unscrupulous thieves on the lookout.
One of the most cost-effective security Christmas gifts you can buy for yourself is an automatic timer for lights. It deters casual opportunists. Also, don’t be tempted to close all your curtains or blinds while you are out, as it can give a clear message that you are away—especially with no lights on for days.

If you are going away, arrange for postal services to keep your mail, or ask a neighbour to pop and collect it each day. This avoids tell-tale piles of post or bulging mailboxes, which are sure signs that nobody’s home. Get neighbours or friends to open and close curtains and park on your drive to maintain a “we’re home” impression.
Don’t leave a spare key in that clever outdoor hiding place that only you know about! You can be sure that if you have thought of it—so will burglars. Electronic car key fobs should be kept in a faraday pouch or other device that prevents signal cloning. All keys should be kept out of sight and well away from any entrance.
Avoid the temptation of announcing your plans on social media or tagging your location on Facebook, etc.
Don’t leave Christmas lights on if you aren’t home. Check the fire safety of your decorations and keep a real tree watered to minimize fire hazards. Escape unwanted Christmas surprises like burst pipes by keeping heating on for a while each day and insulating any exposed outside pipes.
If you are travelling over Christmas, there’s a lot to remember. A checklist made in advance (that you can add to as you go) will save brain power at the last minute and ensure you are good to go when you travel. Keep essential documents accessible and don’t carry liquids over 100ml in your hand luggage.

Plan your route well ahead and set up travel alerts so you know as soon as anything unexpected arises that might scupper your plans, like accidents, maintenance work, or even strike action.
Your turkey stuffing or Christmas pudding may be legendary family favorites, but check restrictions on foodstuffs before you pack if travelling by plane or crossing borders.
Weather is changeable, so double-check your chosen destination and pack accordingly.
Crackers are a great Christmas tradition in some countries, but many airlines don’t allow them in your luggage, nor party poppers, fireworks, or sparklers. Also, avoid pre-wrapping presents in case you’re selected for a security check.

Finally, remember to buy Travel Insurance so your Christmas spirit isn’t dashed by exorbitant medical expenses while you are away.
