There are several good reasons why you should travel this autumn. The weather is cooler, there are less tourists and you can plan your trip around where to see the arrival of autumn at its best with some stunning foliage. It’s the time of the year when nature displays its awe-inspiring beauty, with leaves changing to a kaleidoscope of hues. While there are lots of countries and cities claiming to have the best spot to enjoy autumn colours, these are five places that really stand out:
The colours of autumn start to put on a show here, beginning in late September and stretching into the final days of October. The Great Lakes provide the perfect backdrop to this amazing display of beauty by Mother Nature.
You could see the changing of the leaves while exploring the Mackinac Island State Park, or crossing a bridge at the Creek Discovery Park right at the outskirts of Mackinaw City.
Visit this hill located in the suburbs of the Chinese capital from October until early November, and you’ll be treated to a majestic display of autumn foliage. This location is the most famous and accessible place for tourists to enjoy autumn colours. The colour show is even more spectacular thanks to the maple and smoke trees on the hill.
After frost, the leaves gradually turn colour. By the middle of October, the hill is covered by blanket of purple, orange, and red. The hill is so popular during this season that there is an event called the Fragrant Hill Red Leaves Festival during the second week of October. Thousands of families flock to the hill for this festival.
Florence, Italy is not only known as the centre of Renaissance. It is also one of the best places to enjoy autumn foliage. The trees turn gold in autumn, providing another good reason to visit as well as the fact that the crowds have reduced. There are lots of places to enjoy the colour show in Florence, like the Piazzale Michaelangelo and the Boboli landscaped gardens.
What makes this place so attractive is the Julian Alps, providing a backdrop that only a few other spots can match. The glacial lake is surrounded by lush foliage that slowly turn green and orange a few days before the winter season sets in.
In previous years, there used to be an illumination show in this garden that attracted thousands of visitors. A traditional landscaped Japanese garden, Rikugien has been around since the 17th century. Autumn colours are best displayed from late November to mid-December.
