Your Travel Insurance Dilemma Solved - is Annual or Single Trip Cover Right for You?

12 October 2016

Travel Insurance Tips

Is it better to buy an annual travel insurance policy or a single trip? We look at this Travel Insurance dilemma facing holidaymakers each year.

Travel insurance is essential if you want the peace of mind that you are covered for unforeseen mishaps. With over half a million UK travellers making a claim on their travel insurance each year, mishaps certainly do happen!

Ask yourself a few simple questions to decide whether you are better off taking out an Annual Multi Trip or Single Trip Travel Insurance Policy.

How to get it right

- Are you considering two trips outside of your home country this year? Don’t forget about weekend breaks too.

- Will you travel outside Europe on at least one of these trips? For example long haul to the US or Asia?

- Might you opt for a Winter sports break as well as a summer holiday and weekend away?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, then odds are that it will be more cost effective for you to purchase an annual multi trip Travel Insurance policy this year.

Additional Things to watch out for

Trip duration - Some annual policies limit the number of days you can spend abroad in one trip, or the total number of days abroad for the duration of the policy – so check the terms carefully before you buy. Globelink’s Annual Multi Trip Policy covers you for up to 120 days for each individual trip for those aged up to 65 years and up to 60 days individual trip duration between 66-79 yrs.

Savings for join cover – you may be able to benefit from a lower premium if you are a couple, or purchasing family cover. Globelink offer discounted premiums for couples and also kids under 17 go free.

Family trip

Trips in your home country – another consideration between single and annual cover is that an annual policy will provide cover for domestic trips too, so for example weekend breaks in your home country.

Check for the right cover - remember, that the cheapest policy won’t always provide the cover you need. So ensure that you select cover that is sufficient for the luggage you take, the cost of your holiday (in case you need to cancel or cut it short) and most important of all – a policy that will protect you in case you or your travel companions fall ill or are injured whilst abroad.
